Common Questions

Masters in Germany FAQ

Is education really free for Indian master's students?
Yes — most public universities in Germany charge zero tuition fees for master's programs, regardless of nationality. You only pay a semester contribution of €150–350, which usually includes a transport pass. The exception is Baden-Württemberg, which charges €1,500/semester for non-EU students.
Can I study a master's entirely in English?
Yes — there are over 1,600 English-taught master's programs. You'll need IELTS (6.0–6.5) or TOEFL (80–100). However, we strongly recommend learning A2–B1 German for daily life, job opportunities, and long-term settlement goals.
What is the APS certificate and why is it mandatory?
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verifies that your Indian academic qualifications meet German standards. It's mandatory for all Indian students. The process takes 4–8 weeks. Without it, most universities won't process your application — start early.
What is a blocked account and how much do I need?
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) proves you can financially support yourself in Germany. You need to deposit €11,208 (€934 × 12 months) before applying for your visa. After arriving, you withdraw €934/month. Popular providers: Expatrio, Fintiba, Deutsche Bank.
When should I start preparing for a master's in Germany?
Ideally 12–18 months before your intended start. For October admission, begin by January–February of the previous year. Key timeline: APS certificate (4–8 weeks), language test prep (2–3 months), SOP writing (1–2 months), applications, visa (6–8 weeks before departure).
